Is There a Natural Cure For Sciatica Nerve Pain?

Is there a cure for sciatica pain or will you have to suffer forever? And can sciatica cause paralysis if not treated? What’s the best natural treatment for sciatica nerve pain? Can CBD oil cure sciatica pain?

What is palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), and is it effective for neuropathic pain like sciatica?

Can losing weight cure sciatica?

We’ll answer all of these questions in order, but I should first say that sciatica itself is not a disease, but the result of an underlying cause. So, when we refer to “curing sciatica”, we are really referring to the causes of the sciatica (ie inflammation, pinching, pressure, etc.).

I just needed to put that in. It was stuck to my spleen.

Is There a Cure for Sciatica Pain?

Sciatica happens when the largest and longest nerve in your body – the sciatic nerve – is damaged, pinched, or compressed. The cause of this is typically rooted to things like a degenerative or herniated disc, spinal tumors, spinal stenosis, or from trauma caused by an injury. Most people will experience sciatic pain in their lifetime.

Your sciatic nerve runs down the back of each leg, starting at your lower back, and actually enables you to stand up, and to walk and run. Aside from the things listed above, sciatica pain is most likely to happen to people with diabetes, people who are pregnant or overweight, or have a very physically inactive lifestyle.

The pain from sciatica can feel like a sharp, shooting tingling or burning pain, or more of a mild ache.

Can Sciatica Last a Lifetime?

Is there a cure for sciatica pain, or will you have to suffer forever? Can sciatica cause paralysis if not treated?

Sciatic nerve pain doesn’t commonly last longer than 2 or 3 weeks, but can last for months, years, or even (rarely) your whole life, if you have degenerative spinal issues. But 90% of people suffering from sciatica will recover quickly, and not require surgery, especially if they consider the natural remedies for treating sciatic nerve pain and improve spine health that I am about to list. We are going to focus on one of these, but we will first list some other natural ways to reduce or even heal sciatic nerve pain.

And yes, (the cause of) sciatica can cause paralysis, if not treated.

Cauda equina syndrome (CES) is caused by damage to the cauda equina—a grouping of nerve roots located at the lower end of the spinal cord. Sciatica can result in CES, in rare cases, if left untreated for a long period of time.

Hopefully you keep reading and we can prevent this from happening to you, as unlikely as it is…

Can CBD Oil Cure Sciatica Pain?

Good CBD oil can cure sciatica pain, or at least alleviate it, by taking it orally or applying it topically.

CBD works with the endocannabinoid system of your body. This system plays several roles in the body, including pain management and reducing inflammation. Quality, broad-spectrum or CBD oil can significantly improve your overall health and wellbeing and restore balance, which can in turn lessen the symptoms of sciatica and quicken recovery.

But I can tell you that a whole lot of CBD oil brands are exactly the same product, and are somewhat of a waste of money. Especially the ones at Amazon!

You can read more about CBD oil in our article about it here, and learn why you need to find full or broad-spectrum CBD oil made with nanoemulsion technology, for bioavailability.

What’s the Best Natural Treatment for Sciatica Nerve Pain?

What is the best natural way to treat sciatica?

The following section is courtesy of Larke, who, besides myself, writes many of the articles for Un-Pharma True Health and Wellness. She tells us about a cannabinoid called palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), and how effective it is for sciatica and other neuropathic pain.

What Is Palmitoylethanolamide, or PEA?

What is palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), and is it effective for neuropathic pain like sciatica?

OK, that one is definitely a tongue twister. Thankfully palmitoylethanolamide is commonly referred to as PEA, so henceforth that is what I will mostly call it.

PEA is produced in our bodies to combat pain and inflammation. It is a fatty acid that some believe protects the nerves. Many patients suffering from neuropathic
conditions have pain that is not eased by normal treatments. PEA is emerging as an alternative treatment that is very effective. It is a cannabinoid directly involved in nerve communication. Limited research also suggests that it might support brain, heart, and immune health as well.

Natural Treatments for Sciatica Pain

My experience using Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) for fibromyalgia”

Is PEA effective for treating sciatica?

Research has shown that palmitoylethanolamide is effective for sciatica pain treatment, as well as the following:

  • reducing chronic and neuropathic pain intensity after at least two weeks, more if needed.
  • relieving pelvic pain including endometriosis.
  • reducing fibromyalgia pain and discomfort when taken in addition to standard treatment.
  • reduction of pain after failed back surgery.
  • relieving cancer and arthritis pain.
  • may help brain cells survive and lower inflammation due to neurodegenerative diseases such as
    stroke.
  • reducing eye nerve damage in retinopathy and reducing high eye pressure in glaucoma sufferers.
  • when added to standard therapy reduces adverse effects and pain in people with MS.
  • may fight the influenza virus.

Extensive case studies are currently being carried out to test the efficacy of PEA in several areas. Some examples of these are very encouraging.

1. A 62-year-old male was diagnosed with failed back surgery syndrome and hernia. Treatment with PEA was administered and within three weeks the pain and burning sensations decreased.

2. A 54-year-old Type II diabetic man suffered from chronic neuropathic pain that was characterized by burning sensations in both feet. Treatment with PEA twice daily decreased the pain substantially. After four months it was possible to decrease the dosage with no increase in the pain levels.

3. In a study of 250 stroke sufferers PEA administered with luteolin improved their recovery by having a beneficial effect on cognitive skills, brain health, and daily functioning.

Ongoing animal studies have proven the benefits of PEA which will hopefully prove to mirror those in humans.

1. In mice palmitoylethanolamide improved the recovery from heart attacks and reduced heart tissue injury.

2. PEA was successfully used to relieve symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease in animals.

3. The gut damage caused by ulcerative colitis was prevented in mice.

4. In both animal and cell studies palmitoylethanolamide improved eczema and skin allergies by blocking the release of histamine.

What Is the Best Source for Palmitoylethanolamide?

As in everything, food sources are the best way of getting enough PEA, but many people with food sensitivities could not benefit from soy products which are good
sources. Alfalfa, egg yolks, and peanuts are excellent as well.

As a supplement PEA is available in tablet, capsule, and powder form. Unfortunately most PEA supplements are of synthetic origin so are not considered “natural
supplements.” Micronized PEA is considered by scientists to be superior to other forms. It is a fine powder that is more easily absorbed. What Is the Best Source for Palmitoylethanolamide?

There is an urgent need for new compounds to aid in the treatment of neuropathic pain like sciatica, and palmitoylethanolamide appears to be not only extremely effective but have no side effects or drug interactions. The therapeutic potential is encouraging in that in all the case studies PEA was able to reduce pain by 40% to 80%.

Worldwide more than 800,000 patients have been treated with palmitoylethanolamide (in Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, UK, Canada and US) with the result being noticeable pain reduction and no side effects.

Can Losing Weight Cure Sciatica?

Can losing weight cure sciatica pain, or at least ease it?

Losing weight for sciatica just makes sense. Many have found losing weight to cure sciatica pain (and numbness, weakness or tingling) completely. Why does it work?

First of all, because obesity is the greatest contributor to poor overall health that there is, some of the many issues that obesity will cause are far worse than sciatica. But if you have an inclination to try to cure sciatica by losing weight, it is a great place to start, if you are overweight.

Sciatica – A Set of Symptoms, Not A Disease

Here is how losing weight can cure sciatica:

It probably doesn’t need to be said that mass + gravity = pressure on whatever is under the mass. And the bigger the mass, the more the pressure. Bearing the weight is our skeletal structure, which contains nerves. I’m sure you get the picture.

Losing weight will reduce inflammation and stress on your sciatic nerve. As far as weight loss for sciatica, it is pretty much that simple.

If you really want to lose weight, there seems to me to be no better way than intermittent fasting. It is just a very good practice, which benefits overall health and wellness in a big way.

  1. Wouldn’t it be nice if she could have some comfort for the rest of her life? Age just makes getting sciatica more likely, is all I meant by that. It is pretty hard to not be old, if you are… 🙂

  2. Glad to hear you are better! Thanks for your thoughts. I would be interested to hear more about the miracle…

  3. Sciatica can cause debilitating pain. My mother-in-law suffers from sciatica on occasion, which means she can hardly walk. We have been wondering if this will become a way of life for her, having to deal with the pain, and surgery has been suggested. But at the age of 92, looking for a better solution, has become important to the family.

It is great to see that there are natural treatments for sciatica pain, although I do see that you mention one doesn’t want to be old. I will be looking at CBD oil and PEA to help my mother-in-law with her sciatica pain. Thank you for sharing this great resource.

  4. There was a season of my life where I felt sciatic pain and it basically crippled me. It’s nice to know that there are options available to help alleviate the pain.

I’m most intrigued about the CBD.

I know many doctors wanted Marijuana legalized so they could utilize the medicinal properties of CBD.

Stretching might work. It took  miracle from God to make my pain go away.

But it is wonderful to have several options to try with alleviating the pain.
