There are many ways to consume the elixir called tea. Actually, only tea is tea. But we won’t spend too much time nitpicking about it.
First, you may have noticed that my articles have been absent for a few weeks. No, Craig didn’t fire me, but I have been indulging in a very overdue visit with my extended family. This visit filled my heart and my soul with what I had been missing. But now I have returned and will attempt to impart some new-found knowledge to you, our readers.
Tea Essences and Herbal Infused Tea
Who among us does not experience a deep satisfying moment of blissful relaxation after their first sip of a fresh cup of aromatic steaming tea? Well, let’s talk about that.
Tea may be consumed the regular way, as an herbal infusion, or as a tea essence. Herbal infusions are also called tisanes and are made from the infusion of herbs,
spices, flowers, dried fruit, and sometimes real tea. This is as opposed to “real” tea which is prepared from the cured leaves of the tea plant.
Both of these delicious concoctions are brewed either loose or in tea sachets or bags. Colors and flavors range from light and fruity to vibrant and spicy. Blends can be created that calm, invigorate, or treat minor ailments. We’ll get to tea infusion health benefits and some benefits of medicinal herbs shortly, but first some history:
History of Herbal Tea and Tisane
Just for those history buffs like me I will impart a tiny bit of the history of herbal tea and tisanes. These concoctions go back thousands of years. The word ptisane has Greek roots and means peeled or crushed barley. It was then modified into the French tisane and was morphed into the crushing, cutting, and tearing of botanicals to create herbal teas.
In China and Egypt herbal tea and tisanes have also been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes.
You can choose to call them herbal infusions, tisanes, or herbal teas, they are all basically the same. Infusion is actually a method of preparing tea, also known as steeping. However the teas themselves are often known as herbal infusions.

Tea Infusion Health Benefits and Common Tea Infusion Methods
Most herbal infusions are an excellent source of flavonoids and other polyphenols. Their health benefits include sleep quality, osteoarthritis stiffness relief, oxidative stress relief and even hypo-thyroidism.
Different Types of Tea and Their Benefits | History of Tea
“Tea time” represents a ritual of letting go and indulging in a warm cup of your favorite tea. Herbal infusions are an excellent way to reap the health benefits of medicinal herbs. So I will explain the most common preparation / tea infusion methods here.
Delicate leaves and flowers are used in this concoction. Scoop 1-2 teaspoons of your choice blend into a tea strainer and place into a teapot or mug. Bring water to a boil then pour it over the herbs and cover to contain any volatile oils. Steep for 3-10 minutes.
This utilizes some of the stronger plant parts such as berries, barks, and roots. Firstly they must be “cooked down” to free up flavor and therapeutic compounds. It also softens the plant parts enough to allow the beneficial properties to saturate the water. Place 3 tablespoons of dried tea or herbs in a small saucepan. Cover with one liter of cold water and bring to a gentle simmer. Cover with a lid and continue to simmer for 15-20 minutes. Allow to cool, covered, for 10 minutes. Enjoy immediately or strain into a sealable container and store for up to 5 days in the fridge. Excellent brew for your daily indulgence without all the hassle each time.
This process is a slow infusion steeped in the sun’s gentle warmth, opening the herbs and releasing their medicinal compounds. Enjoy this delicious brew in the summertime. Place 2-3 teaspoons of herbs or tea in a jar. Using filtered water fill the jar to submerge the herbs. Seal tightly and place the jar on its side in a very sunny place. Allow the herbs to diffuse for at least 3-5 hours. When the tea has become rich in color strain it, and serve it over ice. Mmmm, a glass of liquid sunshine.
When enjoying tea in one of these ways you are using it as a medicine for the body, heart, and mind.
What Are Tea Essences?
And now on to tea essences. These have a very authentic flavor and aroma. What are tea essences? They are hand-harvested tea leaves picked at just the right time. They are then put through an innovative extraction process where the essences are captured. At that time the soluble solids are extracted and concentrated. These are often used in baking. Sweetened tea essence is either blended in with the other ingredients or used as a glaze to compliment the finished product. They are delicious in cakes, cookies, and pastries.
Tea essences are often mixed with beverages such as other types of tea to replenish their natural flavor. Steep the tea leaves directly in boiling water, strain out the leaves, and keep the remaining essence to be diluted into other beverages.
Tea Essence Recipe:
1 cup dry tea leaves or contents of 16 tea bags (removed from bags and strained through a coffee filter)
4 cups of distilled or filtered boiling water
Put tea in pot. Pour 4 cups of freshly boiled water over the tea. Steep for 6 minutes. Strain and refrigerate. To use put 1/2 to 3/4 cup of tea essence in an 8 cup teapot and fill with fresh boiling water. Vary the amount of essence to get desired strength.

As usual I now have to be the bad guy and warn you of the few health risks. There are a few herbs that
have not so good qualities. Comfrey, which contains alkaloids, may be harmful to the liver from chronic use. Lobelia may cause nausea, vomiting, or dizziness at high doses. Care must be taken not to use any poisonous plants such as foxglove.
