What Is the Best Source of Resveratrol?
Which Foods Have Resveratrol In Them?
What is the best source of resveratrol? I will begin to answer that with another question.
What fruit is delicious and nutritious and available year round?
Pop Quiz: What versatile, available year round, little fruit that can be green, red, purple, or even white, is bursting with flavor, and brimming with health benefits? If you said grapes you get a gold star.
These little guys are worth their weight in gold. Here are some of the benefits:
- Grapes are full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. As well they are made up mostly of water (about 82%) thus keeping you hydrated. One of their vitamins is the C vitamin which helps your immune system to fight against bacterial and viral infections.
- Grapes are low in sodium so contribute to the lowering of blood pressure due to low sodium diets. Also high in potassium, they assist in balancing blood pressure.
- Grapes protect against diabetes by decreasing blood sugar levels and increasing insulin sensitivity.
- Grapes contain calcium, magnesium, and potassium thereby maintaining strong bones.
- Grapes contain melatonin which we all know helps with sleep. What a bonus for a low calorie bedtime snack!
- Grapes’ beneficial plant compounds help protect the health and function of cells. They are a natural source of polyphenols including resveratrol and quercetin. These, plus vitamin K, also in grapes, all being antioxidants, reduce inflammation, thereby protecting against cancer.
What Resveratrol Is, What Is Resveratrol Good For, and What Are the Health Benefits of Resveratrol?
Resveratrol is an antioxidant found abundantly in (particularly) red grapes. But it is also present in other types of fruit, like cranberries, raspberries and mulberries. But it also can be found in peanuts and cocoa.
Resveratrol can strengthen and protect your heart, as well as helping to reduce oxidative stress, which has a positive effect on your brain, thus helping to reduce Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s effects. It also stimulates the gene linked to a longer lifespan by affecting cell structure and protecting cells. Here is some more detail on just what resveratrol is, and what it’s virtues are.
Let’s talk some more about grapes.
Which Color Grapes Are the Healthiest?
Which color grapes are the healthiest, you might ask? Are some grapes healthier than others?
Well, this choice is entirely up to you as they are very consistent across their rainbow. The most important thing to keep in mind here is to choose grapes in their natural form. This means rather than drinking grape juice or eating raisins, eat fresh, whole grapes about two to three times per week to get their full benefit.
Grapes are relatively affordable (for now) and can be used in many different dishes. As well let us not forget the vino. Sipping 4 oz.- 8 oz of wine daily can cut your risk of viral infections, sinusitis, and bronchitis by 40%. This is because grape skins and hops are rich in flavonoids. These handy guys stop viruses from inserting their genetic material into the cells lining your nose, throat, and lungs. But beware, most red wine in the liquor store is full of red dye and other atrocious things.
For those who do not drink alcohol, non-alcoholic wine is available and has the same virus fighters.
Grapeseed Oil and Its Benefits and Uses
Now I have a surprise for you. There is another delightful way to get the health benefit of grapes. This is in the form of grapeseed oil which is a by-product of the winemaking industry. The seeds and skins which usually end up in our landfills can be rescued and made into oils and extracts. The flavor is mild and pleasant and it can be used in all sorts of recipes including salad dressings and baked goods. It is known for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. Add in the high content of omega fatty acids and vitamin E and you have an effective topical treatment for your skin.
It attacks the bacteria deep in your pores, thereby making your skin clearer and acne free. Research has shown that it improves your skin’s moisture, softness, and elasticity as well. Containing plenty of vitamin E also enables grapeseed oil to increase the production of collagen and elastin.
Both the oil and extracts aid in inhibiting bacterial colonization that can lead to tooth decay. It also is said to aid in the prevention of tooth enamel degradation.
Suggestions For the Use of This Beneficial Oil:
1. A drop of pure grapeseed oil mixed into your moisturizer for both face and body can seal the moisture into your skin.
2. Another way to moisturize is to rub heated grapeseed oil between your hands and apply as a moisturizing mask.
3. This product can also be purchased in liquid or capsule form.
Here is the inevitable warning and then I will give you a recipe for grapeseed oil salad dressing. Yummy and healthy:
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (whew) suggests that grapeseed oil may be unsafe for people with blood conditions, those about to have surgery, or those who take blood thinning medications such as warfarin or aspirin.
Grapeseed Oil Vinaigrette
1/4 cup grapeseed oil
2 tbsp red wine vinegar
1 tbsp liquid honey
1 clove minced garlic
1 tsp parsley
1/2 tsp oregano
salt and pepper to taste
Combine all in a small lidded container and shake to mix. Serve over salad greens.
