Will Baking Soda Help My Kidneys and Liver?

Does Drinking Baking Soda Help Heal Kidneys and More? Will Baking Soda Help My Kidneys and Liver

…And if it helps, how much baking soda should I take daily for my kidneys? And how does baking soda affect the liver? What are some other health benefits of consuming baking soda?

Everyone knows that baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) is an efficient and well used cleaning agent as well as excelling as an odor eater. But wait, let me explain about its many and varied other uses. For those of you who ignore this sort of thing, baking soda can be used as a non-toxic deodorant and even works amazingly well as an antacid to banish heartburn. And there is more. Much more.

What Is the Cause of Heartburn? | Heartburn Home Remedy

A Word of Caution

It first needs to be stated that drinking soda bicarbonate often, over a long period of time can do more harm than good. Our stomach actually needs a high level of acid. If you drink baking soda and water regularly for heartburn/acid reflux, you will need to get to the bottom of what is causing the issue, rather than relying on baking soda.

Does baking soda harm weak kidneys, or help? Dr. Eric Berg concisely explains this in this video.

Although it is known that cancer cannot thrive in an alkaline environment (which would be a great reason to drink soda bicarbonate, you would think), we need acid in the stomach for digestion of protein, absorption of minerals, and the destruction of pathogens which cause digestive problems. In addition, if your stomach is too alkaline, your potassium reserves will be depleted, as well as some other things becoming out of balance. But again, none of this should be an issue unless we are consuming too much baking soda too often, over a long period of time.

Can Baking Soda Put the Boots to Autoimmune Disease?

It is common knowledge that millions of people suffer with some form of autoimmune disease such as rheumatic arthritis, lupus, irritable bowel disease, diabetes, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis and Hashimoto’s disease. Autoimmune disorders occur when the immune system “gets its wires crossed” and attacks its own organs, tissues, and cells. Unfortunately they are complex and hard to treat.

But wait. A new hero has galloped to the rescue. Yes, good old garden variety baking soda has been proven to fight them to a standstill. In a study at Medical College of Georgia it was discovered that drinking baking soda in water every day for two weeks reduced the destructive inflammation of autoimmune disease.

To get a wee bit more technical: Mesothelial cells on the exterior of the spleen sense the environment and warn when an immune response is needed to defend against invading pathogens. Those with some form of autoimmune disorder have a malfunction in that this response can be inappropriate, excessive, and damaging. Well, Sir (or Madam) Baking Soda to the rescue. It tells the cells that this is not necessary, and reassures the immune system that there were no bad guys to be fought.

7 Early Signs and Symptoms of Kidney Infection | Be Aware!

One of the greatest beneficiaries of this potion is the horribly painful and debilitating rheumatoid arthritis. It was proven that the magic elixir of baking soda and water reduced inflammation and disease severity in these sufferers.

Another important breakthrough by scientists: They have discovered that baking soda raises acidic pH to higher alkaline levels, which, in simpler terms means that it can slow the spread of viral infections. For example during the Spanish Flu epidemic in 1918-1919 doctors used this product to some success. They claim that it resolved the symptoms within thirty-six hours.

*Again–do not consume baking soda for longer periods of time than necessary for your condition to be abated. If you suffer from acid reflux, apple cider vinegar will be much more helpful, long term.

Will Baking Soda Help My Kidneys and Liver?

Research has revealed that the use of sodium bicarbonate on patients with chronic kidney disease is a game changer. Supplementing with this product, patients were significantly less likely to experience rapid growth of their disease and were less likely to develop end-stage renal disease.

Sodium Bicarbonate as a Therapy for Chronic Kidney Disease:

“The research literature seems good so far. We’ve reviewed two studies showing improved acid buffering, less muscle weakness, slower rates of decline in creatinine clearance, and improvements in nutritional status with oral bicarbonate supplementation…”

How Does Baking Soda Affect Your Liver?

If you were wondering how baking soda affects the liver, let’s just say right off that it won’t cure cirrhosis, but small doses probably won’t hurt your liver, either.

There are people who say that drinking baking soda and water with lemon juice is good for a fatty liver, but this appears to be a myth, according to many doctors.

A Few Other Ways In Which Baking Soda Aids In Healing:

  • Canker sores are painful and irritating but can be healed quickly with the use of this product mixed with water.
  • It works to neutralize stomach acid, relieving the pain of ulcers. 1-2 teaspoons dissolved in water taken upon onset of the pain will do the trick. Likewise for acid reflux or heartburn (a short-term solution!)
  • Having anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, baking soda rides to the rescue of tooth decay, yeast infections, and skin and nail infections.
  • Urinary tract infection sufferers see a significant level of positive effects on symptoms after ingesting baking soda orally for four weeks.

    • Sunburn, allergic rashes, bug bites, bee stings, and poison ivy benefit from a paste made with baking soda and water.
    • Ouch. Embedded splinters can be irritating, painful, and hard to remove. Once again Sir Baking Soda to the rescue. Soak the affected area twice a day for a few days with one tablespoon of baking soda and a bit of water and your body will expel the splinter naturally.

How Much Baking Soda Is It Safe to Consume?

You might be asking how much baking soda is ok to consume daily. Many health experts recommend half a teaspoon dissolved in about a cup of water every day for maintenance purposes. However do not take baking soda on a very full stomach (like after scarfing down two helpings of your mom’s turkey dinner plus two desserts) as this can cause gastric rupture.

And once again–not long term, and not too much.

  1. Hi Jerry. Thanks for the response.

Baking soda and duct tape are 2 household things I wouldn’t want to be without!

  2. I have heard of baking soda for a long time but only knew it as a cooking attribute. I did not realize that it has the same effects as yeast. I used yeast in my batter for the pizzas. Next, I will try using baking soda and find out how this differs from yeast. It is a big boon that this soda has so many favorable side effects and even is good for the kidneys.

I have a friend with auto-immune disease psoriases and now I am going to alert him of the benefits of using baking soda, however, in moderate quantities as you say.

  3. This article is highly expository. I have used baking soda as addictive but never knew it can be effective in curing kidney diseases. Thank you for spelling out the word caution and the side effects of using baking soda. Above it all, I appreciate the toothpaste recipes you advised. They are ingredients that are rich and easily accessible
